Lunch FAIL (and the food was good)

Ducked out of work for lunch with the wife today and grabbed some sushi. It was quite a bizarre experience, to say the least. Won’t name names, because of that whole if you can’t say something nice upbringing that I have, but will try and convey some of my annoyance to you. Consider this a cautionary tale for how a restaurant can have decent food and still blow it.

Walked in, and sat down at a table. By the time somebody stopped by to take our order or even greet us, 3 additional tables had been seated and waited on. Ok, minor annoyance, but not a big deal in the scheme of things.

About this time I start to notice the cold arctic wind that doubles as an air conditioner in this place. It was unbelievable, and it wasn’t like we were at a table that just happened to be under a vent or something. I walked around and the gale force winds seemed to extend in several miles from the center of the restaurant. It was like eating a meal in a server farm. The force of it was actually blowing my wife’s hair around, and had I not just recently had the Lo Fro shaved off it would have done the same to mine as well. Unbelievable.

The final touch, the expired olive on the stale egg salad sandwich of atmosphere served up by this establishment, was a soundtrack broadcast that was just ri-damn-diculously awful. How’s this for a 5 song set (cranked to earsplitting volume to be heard over the roar of the AC) to wet your appetite:

It’s Raining Men – Weather Girls

Penny Lover – Lionel Richie

Back to back generic house industrial tunes with a vaguely Asian influence (it was just as bad as it sounds)

Man-eater – Hall and Oats

Now granted, I’m overly sensitive to things like this, and realize that my dream of walking into a random eatery in a strip mall and hearing Uh Huh Her by PJ Harvey (or something similarly awesome) is probably just that, a dream, but still. This was so bad as to be borderline offensive.

(While we are on the subject, can somebody explain to me this inexplicable Hall and Oates resurgence? Didn’t we all go through this once before and decide it was bad the first time? Grrr…)

Anyway, just wanted to share this example of how atmosphere can completely ruin an otherwise decent meal. Feel free to share any similar experiences. Or tell me I’m a grumpy old git and should just shut it.

Cheers
