The best of 2005 mix tape
At the time, I remember really, really digging 2005 as a music year, and I’m happy to report that it was as good as I remember even after 10 years time. Some of my favorite albums of the past decade are 2005 vintage (Separation Sunday, LCD Soundsystem, Alligator, Twin Cinema, etc), so there were half a dozen songs that probably deserved to be on here that I just didn’t have room for with that many automatics already in the queue.
As a reminder, the criteria for inclusion is here, and the rest of the best of the 2000s are here. And of course you can use the buttons across the top of the page to find the best of other decades. Only the 50s and 60s to go once the 2000s are in the can.
Daft Punk Is Playing In My House – LCD Soundsystem
Hello, Mr. James Murphy. Good to have you join the party. Would it be too much to ask to get the band back together for a dozen or so more records?
Another Traveling Song – Bright Eyes
I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning is a great album in its own right, but it gets super bonus points for giving the world more Emmylou Harris.
Bucky Done Gone – M.I.A.
My wife asked me one time why I like M.I.A. and I really didn’t know how to answer her. The music’s good man, what can I say.
The Sporting Life – The Decemberists
The jump from M.I.A. to The Decemberists is about as extreme as you can get, on so many levels. Again, it’s just good music, man.
E-Pro – Beck
I almost cut this one for a couple of different songs, but just couldn’t pull the trigger. It’s not all-time Beck by any means, but pretty good Beck is strong indeed.
Modern Girl – Sleater Kinney
I think that makes it 7 for 7 for SK, and I’m willing to bet their upcoming album will be represented on the 2015 mix.
Emily Kane – Art Brut
The only way to describe this song is adorably pathetic. Just wait for the punchline.
All the Wine – The National
If I could pick a personal theme song, like a TV show, this would be mine. Even if I have no idea what the line “I’m a birthday candle in a circle of black girls” means.
Grass – Animal Collective
This song is one of the best and most relatable examples of the hot mess of a mix of styles that is Animal Collective.
Black – Okkervil River
This is just a thumping good indie rock tune, plain and simple.
Sing Me Spanish Techno – The New Pornographers
Take what I wrote the sentence above x 2 and add a hefty dose of Neko Case.
Your Little Hoodrat Friends – The Hold Steady
In 2005 THS was in the midst of as good of a run of music as anybody has in the decade. So good. Nobody tells a story like Craig Finn.
I Will Follow You Into The Dark – Death Cab For Cutie
DCFC is another band that I feel like I’ve shortchanged some in these mixes. They’ve been on the long list but have just missed out of the final multiple times. This isn’t their best song by any stretch, but it’s one of my favorites.
Shine a Light – Wolf Parade
I had completely forgotten about this song and the album that spawned it (Apologies to Queen Mary) until I made this list. Glad for the reminder, because this is a good one.
Munich – Editors
Editors are kind of a one trick pony. Literally half a dozen of their songs sound just like this one, but at least it’s a good template. I really dig the urgency and propulsion of the rhythm.
The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth – Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
I had the hardest time distinguishing these guys with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs at the time. Luckily both were really good at the time so it was hard to go wrong with either.
A strong 16 songs if I do say so myself. Here’s the Spotify playlist for your listening/subscribing pleasure.
Which one of your favorites did I miss?
